Sci-fi to sky high: rocket racers set to leave Formula One in the pits

A SMALL aircraft belching tail flames and piloted by a former space shuttle commander will roar into the air over New Mexico this weekend, starting America’s latest venture in adrenalin-drenched entertainment: rocket racing. The flight by Colonel Rick Searfoss, three times an astronaut and captain of the shuttle Columbia, will demonstrate the X-Racer, the aircraft type that will compete in an annual series that is intended to rival high-thrill, high-profit spectator events such as Nascar and Formula One motor races. ...more
