America Wins Battle For The Internet
A last-minute agreement has avoided a split between the United States and the rest of the world over who controls the internet.The deal - backed by 170 countries - allays fears that totalitarian states such as China, Burma or Iran could extend controls over web use in their countries. Negotiations ahead of a world summit in Tunisia have left America in charge of web domain names and online addresses. It means the private, non-profit Internet Corporation For Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) will continue in its present role.
