Giant water scorpion once stalked Scotland
A GIANT six-legged water scorpion as big as a man once wandered the rivers and swamps of prehistoric Scotland. Tracks of the the creature, Hibbertopterus, which was 5ft long, 3ft wide and lived 330 million years ago, have been discovered in West Lothian.
Hibbertopterus was a eurypterid, or water scorpion, and was previously known to be aquatic, dwelling in the freshwater lakes that dotted the landscape of Scotland during the Carboniferous period, when forests were abundant.
However, new research has proved that Hibbertopterus also stalked the land.
